The barat is the wedding day proper — the groom's procession arriving, the families meeting, the main stage, the varmala, and the meal. It is the largest guest count of the week and the setup that has to hold up under the most eyes.

We build barat stages across Ottawa's banquet halls and convention centres, and we treat the arrival as part of the décor rather than an afterthought, because the procession is where half the video comes from.

The main stage

A barat stage has to work at distance. Guests at the back of a 400-person hall need to see a composition, not a collection of small details — so we build with scale, depth and lighting rather than with fine work that disappears past the third row.

Our stage builds combine backdrop panels, drape, floral installations and seating for the couple. Red and gold remains the most requested palette in Ottawa, and it is genuinely the right choice under most banquet-hall lighting, which runs warm and yellow and flattens cool colours badly.

The arrival — car and truck-art décor

We decorate the wedding car. It is a small booking that has an outsized effect, because the arrival is filmed by everyone and the car appears in every version of the video.

We also do truck-art decoration — the Pakistani folk-art style, in full colour — which is one of the more distinctive things we make and something almost nobody else in Ottawa offers. Varmala, sehra and the couple's pieces

The varmala — the garland exchange — needs garlands that photograph well and survive being lifted over a head repeatedly. We make varmala, haar and gajra in fresh and artificial flowers, and we sell finished artificial garlands outright for families who want to keep them.

Ottawa halls, and planning around them

Large Ottawa barats typically land at venues like the Infinity Convention Centre in the Hunt Club area — 15,000 square feet, 23-foot ceilings and capacity around 1,200 — or Sala San Marco on Preston Street, whose ballroom configuration takes up to 500.

High ceilings change what a stage needs. A backdrop sized for a community hall looks lost under 23 feet of air, and this is the most common mistake we are asked to fix. If your venue has height, the stage has to answer it — vertically, with drape and suspended florals, not just with a wider backdrop.

Milni — the garlands almost every family under-orders

When the barat arrives, the two families meet formally before anything else begins. This is the milni, and it is a distinct ritual with its own requirements.

Close relatives from each side are introduced in matched pairs and greet one another — traditionally working from the oldest generation down: fathers, then grandfathers, then uncles, then brothers, filling any gaps with cousins. Each pair embraces, garlands are exchanged, and envelopes are often given alongside.

The practical consequence is that a milni needs several pairs of garlands, not one. Four to eight pairs is common depending on family size. Almost every family we work with initially orders a single varmala pair — because that is the garland everyone pictures — and then discovers on the morning that the milni needs its own set.

The arrival, and how long it actually takes

Historically a barat could last days, with the groom's party travelling between towns. In practice today the procession itself runs roughly twenty minutes to an hour of dancing before the ceremony — but it is the most energetic and most filmed part of the day.

Traditionally the groom arrives on a ghodi, a mare dressed in embroidered cloth and garlands, signifying prosperity. In Ottawa that is rare and usually impractical, and the modern equivalent is a decorated car — which is exactly why we treat car décor as part of the barat rather than an add-on.

The dhol leads it. That matters for the build: the procession moves, so the entrance and the route to the hall need to stay clear and lit rather than dressed with anything freestanding in the path.
