Marquee Letters

Marquee letters do one thing extremely well: they give a room a focal point that reads from across the hall and photographs at any hour.

We supply them as part of a décor booking so the letters are placed and lit as part of the design rather than parked wherever there happened to be a socket.

Placement matters more than the letters

Letters placed against a busy backdrop disappear. Letters placed against a plain wall or a dark drape read from anywhere in the room.

This is the whole difference, and it is why we prefer supplying them alongside a décor booking — we can position them where they actually work.

Power

Letters need a socket and a cable run that does not cross a walkway. In older Ottawa halls this genuinely constrains where they can go.

We check power positions when we walk the room so the placement is decided before the day rather than improvised on it.

Contrast is the whole thing

Light-up letters work by contrast, and that means where you put them matters more than which letters you choose.

Against a plain dark wall or dark drape they read from anywhere in the room and photograph cleanly. Against a busy floral backdrop, a patterned wall or a light-coloured surface they visually dissolve — the bulbs compete with everything behind them and the shape disappears.

This is the single most common mistake with marquee letters, and it is why we prefer to supply them as part of a décor booking. Placed as part of a design they earn their cost. Dropped off and put wherever there happened to be a socket, they frequently do not.

Power is a real constraint in older Ottawa halls

Letters need a socket, and the cable has to reach it without crossing a walkway — which in a community hall or church basement with sockets on two walls genuinely limits where they can stand.

Taping a cable across a route is not an acceptable answer at an event with two hundred guests, some elderly and some running. So we check socket positions when we walk the room and decide placement around them before the day rather than improvising on it.

If your venue is an older municipal or church hall, this is worth raising early. It is the constraint that most often moves the letters from where you pictured them.

Scale, and the thing photographs do not tell you

Letters look larger in photographs than they do in a room, because a photograph crops to them and a room does not.

In a hall with 23-foot ceilings — the Infinity Convention Centre, for instance — standard letters can look modest against the volume of the space. In a living room the same letters can dominate.

Tell us the room and roughly how far guests will be standing from them. As with everything else we build, the answer depends on the space rather than on a catalogue.
