The mandap is where the Hindu wedding ceremony takes place — a four-pillar canopy under which the couple, the priest and the fire sit. It is the structural centre of the day.
It has to be built properly. A mandap is occupied for an hour or more by several people and it cannot wobble.

Ceiling height is the first question
A mandap needs vertical clearance, and Ottawa venues vary from eight-foot community-hall ceilings to the 23 feet at the Infinity Convention Centre.
In a low room a full-height mandap will not fit; in a very high room a standard mandap looks lost and needs additional vertical work above it. Tell us the venue and the ceiling height and we will size it correctly.
Working with the priest
The ceremony has requirements — space for the fire, seating positions, room for the priest and the families. We build around those rather than around a photograph.
If your priest has specific requirements, tell us at booking. It is far easier to design for them than to modify on the morning.
What the four pillars actually mean
A mandap is not decorative architecture. The four posts represent earth, air, water and fire — the elements the marriage is witnessed by — and the couple, the priest and both sets of parents sit inside that frame for the length of the ceremony.
Traditionally it is built from wood or bamboo and dressed with flowers and fabric, with a kalash (the sacred pot) and the havan kund (the fire altar) inside it. Knowing that changes how you build one: the interior is not spare space to be filled, it is working space that has to stay clear.
The four kinds of mandap, and which suits an Ottawa venue
Traditional wooden
Carved sheesham, mango or pine, often worked with peacock, lotus or geometric motifs. The most traditional look and the heaviest. It suits a large hall with a proper load-in; it is a poor fit for a room reached by stairs.
Metal
Lightweight and rust-resistant, which makes it the sensible choice for anything outdoors or anywhere the structure has to be carried far. For an Ottawa backyard ceremony this is usually the right frame.
Fabric drape
Drape suspended from poles or an existing structure rather than a standalone frame. Cheapest, lightest, and genuinely good in a room with height — but it needs somewhere to hang from, which most municipal halls prohibit.
Modern / acrylic
Clean lines in acrylic, glass or metal, often with a monogram. Photographs beautifully under good lighting and badly under a warm banquet-hall wash, so check the room before committing to it.
What a mandap costs — the honest picture
We could not find a single published Ottawa mandap price, which is itself informative: this is a small market and everything is quoted. The nearest published benchmarks are from the Toronto market, and they are a reasonable frame of reference.
In the GTA, full-package mandap rentals — structure, draping, furniture set, havan kund, carpet, setup and takedown — start around $1,750. A 10×10 acrylic mandap package starts around $2,500. Elaborate builds with crystal and hanging floral work run $4,000–$10,000, and setup fees from around $180 are common on short four-hour rentals.
Ottawa is a smaller market with less competition and longer travel for some suppliers, so do not assume it is cheaper. What we can tell you is what your specific room and ceremony need, and quote that.
