A baby shower is almost entirely photographs. There is no ceremony holding the room together, so the setup carries the whole event.
The two things that matter are the backdrop everyone stands in front of and the dessert table everyone photographs. We build both as a single composition.

Palettes that photograph
Soft pastels are the default request and they work — but they need light. In a dim basement or a north-facing room, pale pink and pale blue photograph as grey.
If the room is dark, we will recommend more contrast and more lighting rather than let the photos disappoint. It is a conversation worth having before the day.

The dark-room problem, and why it matters here more than anywhere
Baby showers are daytime events held indoors in a Canadian climate, which means a lot of them happen in rooms with one window facing the wrong way.
Pastels — the default request — need light to read. In a north-facing living room in March, or a finished basement at any time of year, pale pink and pale blue photograph as grey. The décor looks lovely in person and disappointing in every photograph, which is the worst possible outcome for an event that exists to be photographed.
So the first thing we ask for is a photo of the room, and if it is dark we will say so and recommend either more contrast in the palette or added lighting. This conversation costs nothing before the day and cannot be had after it.
Two tables, not one
A baby shower has no ceremony, so the room is organised around two focal points rather than a stage: the photo backdrop and the dessert table.
The mistake is treating them as separate purchases. Guests photograph the dessert table almost as often as they photograph themselves against the backdrop, and if the two do not share a palette the photographs look like two different parties.
We build them as one composition. It costs no more and it is immediately visible in the pictures.

Gender reveals
If the reveal is happening, it dictates the layout — not the other way around.
We need to know how it is being done: a cake cut, a balloon pop, a smoke device, a box opening. Each has a different sightline requirement, and a smoke or confetti device has a serious one about where guests and the setup are standing relative to it.
Tell us at booking and we design the room so everybody can see the moment and nothing gets ruined by it. Told on the day, we are rearranging furniture while guests arrive.
Who is usually organising it
Almost always someone other than the mother-to-be — a sister, a friend, the mother-in-law — and frequently as a surprise, and frequently coordinating between people who do not all know each other.
Two practical consequences. Bookings are often made without access to the venue for photographs, so send whatever you can get. And the person paying is often not the person whose house it is in, which means we will ask who to coordinate access with. Neither is a problem; both are much easier settled at booking.
