Birthdays are the events people most often try to do themselves and most often regret at 2am the night before, standing on a chair with a roll of tape.

We set up, we come back, and we take it down. For a first birthday in particular — where the photographs matter and the parents are already exhausted — that is most of the value.

First birthdays

First birthdays are the most-photographed birthday anyone has, and the cake smash is the photograph. It needs a clean backdrop, good light and a floor you do not mind.

We build the backdrop and the cake table as one composition rather than two separate things, because that is how they appear in every picture.

At home or in a hall

Most Ottawa birthday setups we do are at home — Barrhaven, Kanata, Orléans, Findlay Creek and Riverside South especially. Everything is freestanding, so nothing marks your walls.

For larger parties in community halls, we work to the venue's access window and clear the room by their end time.

The cake smash is the whole first-birthday brief

Ask any parent what they want from a first birthday and the honest answer is one usable photograph of the child with the cake. Everything else is hospitality.

That photograph has three requirements and they are all physical: a clean backdrop the child does not disappear against, light coming from in front rather than behind, and a floor you are willing to sacrifice. Get those three right and a phone camera produces something worth framing; get them wrong and a professional photographer cannot save it.

So we build the backdrop and the cake table as one composition at one height, rather than as two separate pieces that happen to be near each other. That is the single difference between a first-birthday setup that photographs well and one that does not.

Height matters more than you would think

A one-year-old is about 75 centimetres tall and usually sitting. A backdrop designed at adult eye level puts all its detail well above the child, so the photographs show a lot of empty backdrop and a small person at the bottom.

We build the visual interest low for first birthdays — the dense part of a balloon garland comes down toward the floor, and the cake table is the anchor rather than an afterthought. For older children and milestone birthdays we build normally.

It is a small adjustment and it is the kind of thing you only learn by having done a lot of them.

Children's parties have a different failure mode

At a wedding, décor has to survive being looked at. At a children's party it has to survive being touched, pulled, sat on and occasionally eaten.

That changes what we install and where. Nothing at toddler height that can be pulled over. No small detachable elements within reach. Balloon garlands mounted where a child cannot get a grip on a single balloon — because a popped balloon at a party with twelve four-year-olds is a genuine event.

We would rather design around this than warn you about it afterwards.

Where Ottawa birthdays actually happen

Overwhelmingly at home, and concentrated in the family suburbs — Barrhaven, Kanata, Orléans, Findlay Creek and Riverside South. Almost everything we set up for birthdays is in a living room, a finished basement or a great room.

In winter that means everything indoors and every guest arriving with a coat, so we plan the setup to leave a clear path from the front door. In summer it frequently moves to the garden, which becomes a backyard build with the weather conversation attached.

Community centre bookings — Minto in Barrhaven, Ray Friel in Orléans, the Kanata Recreation Complex — are the other common option, and those come with a firm end time we plan takedown around.
